Canada Express Entry 2026: Official Guide and Practical Tips

Updated: April 11, 2026

Canada’s Express Entry (EE) is the online system used by the federal government to manage permanent resident applications from core economic immigration programs. As of 2026, the system has evolved significantly, focusing more on category-based Invitations to Apply (ITAs).

Step 1: Meet the Entry Requirements

Before entering the Express Entry candidate pool, you must qualify for one of the three federal immigration programs:

  1. Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP): For professionals with foreign work experience.

* Minimum language score: [CLB 7](https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/immigrate-canada/express-entry/eligibility/federal-skilled-workers.html) (IELTS 6.0 in all bands).

* Must meet the 67-point pass mark on the [FSWP Selection Factor grid](https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/immigrate-canada/express-entry/eligibility/federal-skilled-workers/six-selection-factors-federal-skilled-workers.html).

  1. Canadian Experience Class (CEC): For individuals with at least one year of skilled work experience in Canada.

* Requires 12 months of full-time work experience in Canada within the last 3 years.

  1. Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP): For qualified tradespersons in specific industries.

Step 2: The CRS Ranking and Category-Based Draws

Once in the pool, candidates are ranked using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) based on age, education, language skills, and work experience.

Latest Trends (As of April 2026)

IRCC is currently prioritizing Category-Based Selection over general “all-program” draws.

  • Recent Draw (#408 – April 2, 2026): Targeted Trades Occupations. Minimum CRS score: 477. 3,000 ITAs issued.
  • CEC Draw (March 31, 2026): Minimum CRS score: 509.
  • French-Language Proficiency (March 18, 2026): Minimum CRS score: 393 (remains one of the most accessible pathways).

10 Active Selection Categories for 2026

IRCC now uses 10 categories for targeted draws, including:

  • Physicians (Record low score of 169 in Feb 2026)
  • Senior Managers
  • Researchers
  • Healthcare Workers
  • STEM Professionals
  • Trades, Transport, and Agriculture
  • French-Language Proficiency

Note: All category-based draws now require 12 months of qualifying work experience.

Step 3: Invitation to Apply (ITA) and Processing

If your score exceeds the round’s cut-off, you will receive an ITA for Permanent Residence.

  1. 60-Day Deadline: You have 60 days to submit a complete online application.
  2. Processing Times: IRCC’s target for Express Entry remains 6 months. Check the [Official IRCC Processing Times Tool](https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/application/check-processing-times.html) for real-time estimates.
